Sugar Land is not a good place to live; it is a great place to live! Part of the original Mexican land grant to Stephen F. Austin, Sugar Land was initially called "Oakland Plantation" due to the extensive variety of oak trees in the area – willow, post, water, southern red oaks all are prevalent in the area. The land was largely used to grow cotton, corn, and sugarcane, the latter giving the city its name today. Sugar Land these days is so much more than an agricultural center – it is one of the fastest growing cities in Texas with one of the highest standards of living in the entire nation.
Sugar Land’s economy is as diverse and growing, with significant presences in petroleum exploration, refining, oilfield management, engineering, software, and the beverage industry – in 2009, Minute Maid moved its corporate headquarters to the Sugar Land Town Square. It is thus little surprise that Sugar Land is one of the most affluent and rapidly-growing cities in Texas – in the past decade alone, the city has grown an astonishing 158 percent and between 2000 and 2007, Sugar Land enjoyed 46% job growth.
The city has an excellent public school system with a proud record of achievement. Clements High School and Austin High School have been recently recognized by Texas Monthly magazine in its list of the top 10 high schools in the state of Texas. Furthermore, both Clements and Austin ranked among the top 1000 schools in the United States according to a 2009 Newsweek report. The Fort Bend Independent School District serves most all of Sugar Land; a few small areas within the Sugar Land city limits are in the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District. There are also a number of outstanding private school options in the area
A 2010 resident satisfaction survey shows just how much Sugar Land residents love their town – 97 percent of citizens responding rated Sugar Land’s quality of life as excellent or good; 93 percent agreed that Sugar Land is a well-planned community that ensures compatible land use for residential, office and retail purposes; 90 percent of citizens report feeling safe or very safe throughout the City; and 91 percent are satisfied with City services in return for dollars paid. These numbers are hard to beat. We think the same holds true for our wonderful city.
