Master Planned Communities are large-scale developments that can include a wide array of single family homes and condominiums, multiple builders, diverse amenities and non-residential uses such as schools, retail shops and recreational spaces. The Master Planned Community concept is designed to appeal to a wide array of buyers by creating a superior "place" with segmented product types that share a common design and marketing theme.

According to a survey by John Burns Consulting, in the year 2011, the Greater Houston area featured 12 different master planned communities in the top 50 rankings in the country.  These communities include:  The Woodlands(ranked #2), Cinco Ranch(ranked #3), Telfair(ranked #10), Riverstone(ranked #15) and Sienna Plantation(ranked #18).

The Greater Houston area featured the highest number of Top 50 ranked master planned communities among all US Metro areas.   This is testament to Houston's stable real estate market and economy which continue to grow.
