“You’ll Love Katy” – this greeting is on a welcome sign as you enter the city. And for over a century, its citizens have held this sentiment near and dear to their hearts. Katy is a great place to visit, and an even better place to live. The initial settlement was known as Cane Island for the Cane Island Creek that ran through it. The city of Katy was founded in 1895, its name apparently coming from the M-K-T Railroad that runs through it; the MKT was commonly referred to as "the K-T" (its stock exchange symbol) and this quickly evolved into "the Katy".
Katy has always been a traditional family style community and as such a wonderful place to raise kids. And as mentioned above, the area also has major, long-standing role as a rail hub, rice farming and agricultural center, and also has one of the largest gas fields in Texas. The city has a true sense of community spirit, safe neighborhoods, and excellent schools. Perhaps nowhere is this sense of community more evident than in the three Governor’s Community Achievement Award projects – part of the Keep Texas Beautiful initiative by the Texas Department of Transportation – that the city has won in the past decade: 2001 highway landscaping, 2007 bronze geese sculpture “The Landing” installed at the corner of Katy Mills Boulevard and Highway 90, and a 2010 award at a location to be selected this year.
Katy also offers its citizens and visitors many exciting historical and cultural and outdoors opportunities: visit the Harvest Plaza – dedicated to the rice farming community – or the Katy Heritage Museum and Park. Katy recently built a gorgeous, modern, 15,000-square foot library in a beautiful park-like setting. Designed for citizens of all ages to use and enjoy, the modern facility has an open, welcoming atmosphere, to encourage individuals to stay and read, study, relax or surf the internet. Or check out Katy’s “Old Town” district with a nostalgic feel of yesteryear and its dozens of boutiques. Katy is also convenient for the air traveler – the George Bush Intercontinental Airport is a short 45 minute drive away.
It is easy to see why in 2009 the Gadberry Group named Katy as one of nine "9 from 2009" most notable high growth areas in the United States
