Fort Bend County is an incredibly popular place to be these days; according to the 2010 U.S. Census, its population increased a staggering 65% between 2000 and 2010. A quick glance at what the county offers residents in terms of employment, education, recreational and cultural opportunities and you will see why Fort Bend has consistently been one of the fastest growing counties in the entire country for decades.
A handful of Stephen F. Austin’s colonists built a fort at the present site of Richmond, the present day county seat, around 1822. They called it "Fort Bend" since it was built at the bend of the Brazos River. Today nearly 200 year later, Fort Bend County offers a multitude of economic and employment opportunities. Fort Bend County maintains a long-standing agricultural tradition which dates back to its original settlers who raised cattle, cotton, and sugar cane. Today, the area economy is strong and diverse – petrochemicals, technology industries, sugar refining, education, energy, hospitality all have a strong presence in Fort Bend. Just last year, the Houston Business Journal said that the diversity of Fort Bend’s industries has been the primary factor in the recent decades of rapid growth.
Fort Bend County’s desirable location is in part due to the fact that it boasts a strong public education system. The area’s public schools are unmatched in the great state of Texas and routinely are recognized at the state and national level. Fort Bend is also proud of its remarkable diversity – in 2011 Fort Bend was ranked the fourth most racially-diverse country in the United States by USA Today. Fort Bend County also has a regional airport, Sugar Land Regional Airport, and the George Bush Intercontinental Airport is less than an hour away by car.
Fort Bend also has tons to do for the outdoor and cultural enthusiast. The county has over 8,000 acres of public parks and five landmarks listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Fort Bend County Courthouse and the Lamar-Calder House. In short, Fort Bend is an area on the rise because it is such a desirable place to live and raise a family.
